| Standing in the centre of Leicester is the Secular Hall at 75 Humberstone Gate, which was built to house Leicester Secular Society in 1881. "Radical Leicester" has always been a centre of non-conformity both in the political and narrowly religious senses, and in the widest and more general meaning of the word. The Society carries on this tradition. The objects of the Society are :- * To promote a civil society that accords and guarantees equal worth and rights to all individuals, based solely on human values and needs, and without reference to any transcendental or supernatural concepts. * To promote freedom of belief and thought. * To promote open dialogue, participation, cooperation and friendship. * To promote freedom of expression and action. * To oppose any privileges, structures, obstructions or pressures that interfere with the above, whether deriving from the state, religion or any other source. |
